I've found additional companions to be more of a nuisance than help, since Marcus' turns become screwed if you tell him to not burst you (avoids Bozar sprays to my back) and some bigoted racist questgivers require you to dismiss him on their property (and K-9 js I remember correctly). With myself rocking that sweet 12 AP + Fast Shot + Bonus RoF + Sniper with Gauss weapons, your only enemies are crits from Enclave soldiers and maybe some robbers if you're on a looting spree. Sulik tanks and pushes enemies away, Cassidy rips them open with a Gauss rifle and the dog has an obscene amount of 19 AP.
